Last Updated: 11 months ago

By: Maria Fitriah, S.Sos., M.Si (Lecturer of Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Communication Science, Djuanda University, Bogor) World Music Day falls on June 21 every year. It was first held in 1982 in France to coincide with the Summer Solstice celebration. One of the famous composers, Maurice Fleuret, helped create World Music Day. World Music Day is a moment of appreciation for the contributions of musicians. Through music, we use communication techniques to convey messages. Musicians can interact through message transmission. Music is created based on a person's feelings, thoughts, characteristics, and experiences. Not only affective, music can affect a person's cognitive and conative. This is because the message through music will bring stimulus to the listener. Music has lyrics that are said to be verbal messages in communication in the form of meaningful symbols. Musicians create song lyrics from a reality or phenomenon. Music connects the soul of art with social awareness. In a relaxed and gentle way, music is a means of conveying facts. In line with what Sobur (2013) said, human culture is so closely related to symbols that humans are also called creatures with symbols, humans think, feel, and behave with symbolic expressions. In addition to lyrics, tones also rhyme in music into a song. Verbal messages contained in music include words and sentences, both text or written and spoken. We can convey a message of concern for social conditions. These messages are implied advice or criticism. For example, the song Surat Buat Wakil Rakyat by Iwan Fals from his album entitled Wakil Rakyat in 1987. Messages conveyed through song lyrics can describe and create an atmosphere from the creator to the listener. The creator conveys the content of the ideas that are in his mind so that the message can be understood so that it is enjoyed by the listener. Thus, humans can interact with each other with the level of understanding of the message in the music of the song. Through music, we do intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, and mass communication. The meaning of the song in the music performed can be heightened with a performance or orchestra packaging. Here, visual communication can provide an offering to the audience while watching. It can be said that music can be applied to semiotics which has meanings including song lyrics, instrumentals, and orchestral movements. Feedback in music is not always immediate in the communication process. The interaction of sending messages to receiving messages is done verbally. Communication in the music that someone listens to is the recipient of the message from the creator or singer. But there are effects from the activities of the communication process. The effects arising from song music include someone becoming sympathetic, empathetic, and wanting to act something on what is depicted in the lyrics. So music can also be said to be a bridge of communication in delivering messages. Of course, music has its own unique characteristics. A person can express creatively through the music presented. Therefore, one can be influenced through the lyrics. However, it is concerning if there are releases that are only for commercial purposes. It is hoped that music must have an essence that represents current issues. Source : https://unida.ac.id/artikel/makna-pesan-komunikasi-melalui-musik (UNIDA Public Relations)
