The Communication Science Student Association (HIMAKOM) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Djuanda University (UNIDA), once again demonstrated its existence as an adaptive and progressive organization through the organization of an upgrading program themed “Press Release.” Held at the Communication Laboratory on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the activity was designed as a concrete effort to enhance members’ competencies, particularly in writing and public communication skills that are increasingly needed in the digital era.
The interactive event featured Siti Balqis Sari Manah and Nur Fatia Ramadhan as speakers. Both delivered in-depth materials on press release writing, ranging from basic theories to practical implementation in the professional communication field.
Chairperson of HIMAKOM, Fairuz Husna Lana, explained that the activity aimed to equip members with practical skills. According to her, theoretical understanding alone is insufficient without technical abilities that can be directly applied in every organizational agenda.
“We designed this upgrading program so that members can develop practical skills that can be applied in distributing organizational information to the public,” she stated.
During the first presentation session, Siti Balqis Sari Manah explained that a press release serves as an official communication instrument for organizations to deliver information to the public through mass media. She emphasized the fundamental differences between journalistic news and press releases, where press releases are internally produced and tend to be more promotional while still upholding factual accuracy.
“Good writing is not only enjoyable to read, but also capable of delivering messages clearly and accurately to readers,” she explained.
She stated that the essence of a press release lies in effective message delivery. In her view, beyond the beauty of language structure, a piece of writing must function as a communication medium that ensures the message is truly conveyed and understood by the audience. In addition, she explained several press release writing techniques, including the use of the inverted pyramid structure, creating compelling headlines, and composing leads that clearly and concisely summarize the main information.
The session was continued by Nur Fatia Ramadhan, who provided general insights regarding the use of quotations in press releases. She highlighted that quotations do not merely function as complements, but also as important elements in strengthening the message being delivered. In her explanation, she emphasized that the use of indirect quotations is essential as a bridging element before moving into direct quotations so that the flow of writing remains smooth and natural.
“A communication work is considered successful when the audience can clearly understand the content and purpose of the message,” she explained.
She emphasized that the success of a press release or communication design should not be viewed solely from the creator’s perspective.
The activity received positive responses from one of the participants, Farhan Adi Nugroho, who considered press release writing to be a fundamental competency that communication students must master before entering the field of public relations. In line with the speakers, he believed that press release writing is more than just ordinary writing activity.
“Writing a press release is not simply about arranging words, but about how we package information into messages that are effective, informative, and credible to be shared appropriately with audiences,” he said.
Through this activity, HIMAKOM UNIDA demonstrated its commitment to continuously improving the quality of its members so they can become more professional and competent, especially in managing and delivering organizational information accurately and credibly. This effort is expected to equip members not only with theoretical understanding, but also with practical skills in writing and communication, preparing them to face challenges in the professional world, particularly in the field of public relations.
