UNIDA Communication Science Lecturers Emphasize Participatory Communication as Key to Sustainable Development in FISIP Book Review

In the second session of the faculty book review series, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Djuanda University (UNIDA) highlighted the importance of participatory communication in supporting sustainable development. The event, held on Wednesday (April 15, 2026) at the Hall of Building C, was attended by members of the academic community and regional government officials.

The book titled “Sustainable Development Communication,” authored by lecturers of the Communication Science Study Program at FISIP UNIDA, discusses development communication comprehensively, from theoretical foundations to practical implementation. It emphasizes that communication processes must be two-way and involve active public participation.

The event featured Prof. Dr. Agustina M. Purnomo, S.P., M.Si as the main speaker. The discussants included Dr. H. Muhammad Luthfie, Drs., M.Si and Dr. Ali Alamsyah Kusumadinata, S.P., M.Si, with Maria Fitriah, S.Sos., M.Si serving as the moderator.

In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Agustina M. Purnomo explained that development communication must create space for public participation.

“Communication is not merely top-down; it must also open space for community participation,” she stated.

During the discussion session, Dr. H. Muhammad Luthfie emphasized that development communication functions to align understanding between policymakers and the public so that programs can be implemented effectively.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ali Alamsyah Kusumadinata highlighted that development communication is not only about delivering messages but also involves participation, persuasion, and public acceptance of implemented policies.

The Dean of FISIP UNIDA, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hj. Rita Rahmawati, M.Si, affirmed that communication plays a strategic role in bridging policies and society.

“Development communication is essential to ensure that every policy is well conveyed, understood, and receives feedback from the public,” she said in her remarks.

For your information, this book review activity is part of the series commemorating UNIDA’s 39th Anniversary. FISIP UNIDA organized the book review in two sessions: the first session discussed a book by lecturers from the Public Administration Study Program titled “Good and Sustainable Governance.”

Meanwhile, the second session featured a book by lecturers from the Communication Science Study Program titled “Sustainable Development Communication,” which highlights the importance of participatory communication approaches in supporting successful development.

Through this activity, FISIP UNIDA promotes the strengthening of academic traditions while also demonstrating UNIDA’s tangible contribution as a leading higher education institution in responding to development dynamics within society.
